The Materials Science & Engineering Center at the Department of Biological & Chemical Engineering, Aarhus University, Denmark, invites applications for Assistant Professors.
The successful candidate(s) will be affiliated with the Center’s projects led by Prof. Dr. Anja-Verena Mudring and funded by the NovoNordisk Foundation.
Expected start date and duration of employment
The positions are 4-year positions from 1 January 2027 or as soon possible.
Your job responsibilities
As an Assistant Professor of Materials Science & Engineering at our center, you are expected to conduct research at a high international level in the center’s projects under the guidance of Prof. Anja-Verena Mudring. You are committed to delivering high-quality teaching and supervision and bring collaborative skills, and intellectual curiosity. You are eager to engage in the academic community at Aarhus University and contribute to strengthening the department’s national and international profile. We also value academic citizenship. This includes active participation in collegial collaboration, mentoring, and the social and professional life of the unit. We therefore expect you to be an engaged and visible member of the unit’s daily academic environment.
Your main tasks will consist of:
- Research of high international quality in the center projects
- Disseminate research results in scientific articles and contributions at international congresses.
- Contribution towards attracting external research funding.
- Teaching and supervising students and interns.
You will report to the Head of the Materials Science & Engineering Center Prof. Dr. Anja-Verena Mudring.
Your competences
- PhD in Materials Science, Material Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics or equivalent
- Postdoctoral experience in a field of materials science & engineering
- Thorough experience in one or more of the following
– in solid state synthesis like synthesis of molten salt compounds, alloys and intermetallic compounds
– synthesis of molten salts and ionic liquids
– synthesis of inorganic and hybrid materials using molten salts and ionic liquids
– corrosion of metals/reaction of molten salts/ionic liquids with metals and alloys
– f-element chemistry
– materials characterization with X-ray and/or electron and/or neutron diffraction methods
– characterization of thermal materials properties
– characterization of magnetic and/or mechanical properties of materials - Scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals in the area of materials science as first author and co-author
- Fluent in oral and written English.
- As a person, you are motivated, ambitious, take ownership and possess good communication and interpersonal skills.
Who we are
The Materials Science and Engineering Center at the Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering at Aarhus University, Denmark is a unit that is comprising materials synthesis, characterization and modelling.
Its current focus is the investigation of ionic liquids and high temperature molten salts for engineering applications such as thermal energy storage and management, lubrication, molten salt reactor research as well as task-specific media for active pharmaceutical ingredient development.

Deadline

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment.
Formalities and salary range
Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary and terms as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Unions at basic salary steps 4-8.
