Associate Professor in AI and Computer Vision in the Bachelor of Engineering (Diplom) programme

At the Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology at the Faculty of IT and Design, Aalborg University, we are looking for an experienced and engaged colleague to join the Bachelor of Engineering programme as Associate Professor in AI and Computer Vision.

You will play a central role in educating future engineers, combining deep technical expertise with close interaction with students in a problem-based learning environment, while contributing to an active research community within artificial intelligence and computer vision.

The position is a permanent full time position (37 hours per week) with an expected start date of 1 November 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Your work tasks
In this position, you will teach and supervise primarily within the Bachelor of Engineering (Diplom) programme in Artificial Intelligence Engineering. You will be responsible for teaching courses in topics such as machine learning, deep learning, MLOps, image processing, and computer vision, and you will contribute to aligning the course portfolio with current developments in the field and in industry. A key part of your work will be supervision of student projects, where you guide students from idea to implementation and help them connect theory with practical engineering challenges.

You will be an active researcher within deep learning based image and video enhancement, with particular focus on applications to forensics and surveillance. You are expected to develop and lead research activities in this area, publish in recognised international venues in computer vision, and contribute to the development of new project ideas that can attract external funding. Collaboration with industrial partners is an integrated part of the research agenda, and you will help strengthen and expand these collaborations to ensure that the research has real-world impact and informs both teaching and student projects.

In addition, you will contribute to the ongoing development and coordination of the study programme. This includes course and semester coordination, participation in curriculum development, and involvement in quality assurance of teaching and examination formats. You will work closely with colleagues across the department to ensure coherence between courses and projects and to further develop the problem-based learning model. Participation in academic and administrative committees, assessment work, and dissemination of research and teaching-related activities is also part of the position.

Your competencies
You hold a PhD degree in computer vision and have documented experience from a position as assistant professor or an equivalent academic role. Experience from a computer vision or artificial intelligence position in industry is also a requirement, and you are comfortable drawing on that experience to make teaching and projects relevant for engineering practice. You have a solid research track record within deep learning based image and video enhancement or closely related areas of computer vision, and you are motivated to further develop this profile with a focus on applications in forensics and surveillance. A strong publication record in leading computer vision venues and experience with research collaboration with industrial partners are considered clear advantages.

You have documented experience with university-level teaching, supervision, and course coordination within engineering or computer science. You are familiar with and committed to problem-based learning, and you are able to design learning activities and project courses where students work on realistic challenges, often in collaboration with external partners. Experience with integrating modern machine learning tools and software practices into teaching, for example MLOps platforms and deployment of machine learning systems, will be an asset.

You are fluent in both Danish and English and can use both languages actively in teaching, supervision, and internal collaboration. As a person, you are structured and curious, and you are genuinely interested in working closely with students and supporting their ideas. You are a considerate colleague who contributes positively to the research and teaching environment, and you are willing to take responsibility for mentoring younger staff and helping them develop their academic careers. You thrive in a collaborative setting where you share knowledge, coordinate tasks, and work together to build a strong academic environment in AI and computer vision.

Who we are
You will be employed at the Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology at Aalborg University and anchored in the Visual Analysis and Perception Lab at Rendsburggade 14 in Aalborg. The Visual Analysis and Perception Lab is a well-established research environment in artificial intelligence and computer vision with around 40 staff members. The lab covers a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from fundamental vision algorithms and deep learning methods to applied research projects carried out in close collaboration with industrial and public partners. The department has a strong teaching portfolio across several technical bachelor and master programmes, and the Visual Analysis and Perception Lab plays a key role in courses focusing on AI, image processing, and computer vision. The Bachelor of Engineering (Diplom) in AI Engineering programme is characterised by a strong problem-based learning culture and close collaboration with companies, where students work on applied projects that address concrete challenges. As a new associate professor, you will be part of developing this learning environment and ensuring that students gain both solid theoretical insight and practical engineering skills in AI.

Qualifications
The qualification level is obtained on the basis of three years of employment as an assistant professor. Equivalent qualifications acquired in other ways may also be considered.

Salary and terms of employment  
Employment is in accordance with the Circular on the job structure for the Bachelor of Engineering and Export Engineering programs (in Danish), as well as Appendix 1 – note on the job structure for teachers in the Bachelor of Engineering and Export Engineering programs (in Danish).  

Salary and terms of employment are in accordance with the collective agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the state (AC collective agreement) (only in Danish) and protocol on certain terms of employment of academic staff at universities (only in Danish). 

There is a mutual probationary period of 3 months for the position.
