HCI Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Multimodal Interaction for Remote Physical Artefacts at Department of Computer Science, Aarhus University – 2 years

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join our project on Multimodal Interaction for Remote Physical Artefacts (MIRA), funded through an ERC Consolidator Grant. The project addresses an important challenge in Human-Computer Interaction research: how can we create a proxy for a remote physical object that does not replicate, but extends the experience of interacting with the object itself?

Digital platforms do not convey the tactile, spatial and multisensory qualities that are integral to shared manipulation of tools, prototypes and materials. In the MIRA project, we will develop prototypes and environments that integrate visual, auditory and haptic stimuli for remote collaboration.

The successful candidate will take a leading role in the project’s central technical objective: the design, construction and evaluation of novel multisensory interaction techniques and systems.

Expected start date and duration of employment
This is a 24-month position starting from 1 February 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.

We are looking for someone with

• A PhD in Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, or a closely related field
• Strong technical skills with developing multisensory systems, especially haptics (actuators, tactile displays, force feedback devices)
• Strong visual computing skills (Unity, C++/C#, Python, rendering, tracking or 3D reconstruction pipelines)
• A solid track record of HCI research (e.g., publications in relevant venues such as CHI, UIST, CSCW, or similar)
• Experience designing, implementing, and evaluating interactive systems
• An interest in collaborative computing, and/or future work practices

This is a full-time (37 hours/week) on-site role located at Åbogade 34, 8200 Aarhus N, Denmark.

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self.

Formalities and salary range
Natural Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary and terms as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Unions at basic salary steps 4-8.
