Senior researcher position combined with a clinical professorship in translational molecular neuropathology and biomarker studies

A clinical position as senior researcher of molecular neurobiology at the Centre for Neuroscience and Stereology, Department of Neurology at Copenhagen University Hospital – Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg is open for appointment from as soon as possible.

The position is combined with with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical professor of Department of Clinical Medicine at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the clinical position.

About the department of Neurology We are a department with a high level of expertise and activity, handling over 15.000 patient contacts annually. The Neurology Department diagnoses and treats patients with diseases related to the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. This includes, in particular, stroke, movement disorders, epilepsy, brain tumors, headaches, and head trauma. Under the broader category of movement disorders and neurodegenerative diseases, conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, atypical parkinsonism, dystonia (including treatment with botulinum toxin), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS/MND) are included. The Centre for Neuroscience and Stereology is a research center affiliated with the department focusing primarily on movement disorders.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the Centre for Neuroscience and Stereology

• Responsible for overseeing the administration of the Bispebjerg Brain Bank, the procedures associated with brain tissue handling (including approvals, collaboration agreements etc.), maintenance of procedures and further development of new ones.
• Responsible for establishing and developing new assays for the molecular phenotyping of brain pathology.
• Responsible for establishing biochemical assays for biomarker studies in Parkinson and atypical Parkinson patients.
• Responsible for supervision and the establishment of preclinical studies, including animal and in vitro studies. This includes obtaining approvals for animal research, reporting statistics, conducting animal research and health monitoring.
• Responsible for laboratory functions and equipment (immunohistochemistry, in vitro, molecular biology)
• Supervising new staff laboratory and research personnel.

Research and teaching With the new position, senior researcher and clinical professor of translational molecular neuropathology and biomarker studies, the Department of Neurology wishes to strengthen leadership in research and teaching in translational molecular neuropathology. This includes strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration, promote patient involvement in research projects, and communicate research findings to academia and the clinical setting. We want to strengthen Bispebjerg Brain Bank position as a unique resource for the various research environments in neurodegenerative research, through implementation of new biochemical assays, histological and molecular studies. Postmortem studies will be combined with in vitro and in vivo studies for functional studies. It is also desired to research in the application of new methods, such as the seeding amplification assay, as a biomarker approach for patient stratification.

Qualifications

• Experience managing a research unit including budget and personnel responsibility.
• Experience with human studies (ethic committee approvals, data approvals)
• Experience with animal models and animal welfare committee work (DVO – dyrevelfærdsorgan)
• Track record of supervising master students, phd-students, post-docs and technicians.
• Track record of human postmortem brain studies, including histological, molecular and biochemical (eg. omics based), preferable within Parkinson and atypical parkinsonism.
• Track record of preclinical studies, including animal, in vitro and biomarker studies
• Track record of receiving research grants

Conditions In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the clinical position) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as senior researchers at Copenhagen University Hospital – Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital.

Salary and conditions of employment as senior researcher are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.

As clinical professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g., research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of Department of Neurology, Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital. The clinical professor will receive secretarial or technical support equivalent to 50 % of a full-time secretary position from the department of Neurology. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the head of the department of Neurology, Copenhagen University Hospital – Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital.
